New Garden

I decided to put my little garden in a different spot this year. My old location was in my backyard, but it was getting to where it didn't receive morning sun and all afternoon sun. So, new location. I have put this one down close to the barn. There is also a water spigot close. A MUST! I tilled it up a couple of weeks ago and then tilled in some chicken house fertilizer.

This space is about what it looked like before I tilled it up.

Oscar decided he needed to rest in the cool ground.

When I started planting my tomatoes, I found a problem. Clay ground underneath. I am not starting over. Hopefully something will grow.

I have my tomatoes and bell peppers planted. I am going to plant one squash and jalapeno pepper plant.

I still have move work to do on this. After I get everything planted, then I have got to put some pine straw over this so I won't be fighting weeds every minute. Time to say a little prayer.

We lived in a place once that had clay soil. It took the plants a little longer to get established but once the roots broke through the clay they really took off.

Do your plants ever get too hot in the summer? I've heard of that happening.

And thanks for the tip on the pine straw. Is there a particular reason you use that?

Good luck, for sure! I'm sure the chicken fertilizer will help. :)

Linda, yes, sometimes they will really heat up when it is really hot. I mainly use pinestraw because I have a lot around me.

Great that you have ready mulch available, Becky. :)
Do you do anything particular when it gets really hot? Like a soaker hose half the day or anything?
Just curious. :)

Congrats on getting stuff in the ground! We're still working on leveling our new garden spot, and for it to dry out enough to till.

Btw, what's pinestraw? Needles?

Linda, I'm hoping I have the garden in an area will get the late afternoon shade. Hopefully that will help and I do use soaker hose. Sometimes when they wilt, they will perk back up after the sun goes down. Yes, Rae, needles fallen off the pine trees. We southerners have a different talk, I believe. lol

Ah, thought so, but wasn't sure. I remember seeing needles used in the landscaping when I went back east, and thought that it was a great idea. The evergreens we have don't shed enough to be useful for that. Too bad I can't figure out a use for blackberry brambles. We have plenty of those! :)

Thanks again, Becky. I hope it's your best garden yet! :)
