The Old Homestead

Today I thought I would show you where I was raised. My great grandfather came from Alabama in 1891, I believe. I think more was added to the original. The chimney that was on the right side of the house was made out of stone. It had to be torn down last year. The chimney on the left is made out of brick. I have a lot of memories of living in that old house. Like the barn in my header, no one really know the exact age of these buildings. Just that they are over one hundred years old. This house is in very bad shape. It will have to be torn down soon or it will be falling on it's own.

Dear Becky,
I'm so glad you posted these -- they are really good pictures of the house. Do you know I've never actually been inside except for the kitchen? When I was in high school I used to like to hang around while George fed the animals in the late afternoon. I used to go over to feed my horse Ben. I've always wished I could have seen it completely intact & been inside. Ask Mom about taking her little dog with her under the house so my granddad couldn't get her and take her home (she just loved to stay there with her grandparents)! It is such a shame the house will have to be taken down and I really wish there was some way to restore it -- it is N. LA history in addition to family history. I thought they built the house, I didn't know they added to an existing structure. I'm pretty sure George had the deed to the property & that it was purchased with so many bales of cotton.

P.S. I just think you are so lucky that you had an opportunity to live in the old house! Love, E.

It's good that you'll at least have pictures to go with your memories when the house is torn down. What a shame that it couldn't be restored.
